Why winterizing your inground pool is crucial (and how to do it successfully)?

Whether it’s your first time closing your pool or your thirtieth, this is an essential step in extending the life of your pool. Poorly executed winterization can cause costly damage such as frozen pipes, cracks in the pool, algae and bacteria growth, and even damage to filtration equipment.

When should you close your swimming pool?

The ideal time to close your pool is as close as possible to the first frosts of fall. For the greater Montreal area, this is mid-October, but the date may vary depending on your region. It’s also important to keep the filtration system running until this date, even if you’re no longer swimming, to avoid damage to the pipes.

Step-by-step closing guide (allow 2-3 hours)

Complete cleaning (to be performed the day before closing): Vacuum the pool, backwash, balance the pH, and scrub any visible stains on the liner.

*It is also important to perform a visual inspection; a drop in the water level could indicate a leak that should be repaired before winter.

Removing accessories: It is necessary to remove, clean, and store all your accessories in a dry, frost-free location.

Reducing the water level: Lower the water level to 1″ below the water returns.

Draining the pipes: For this step, use a vacuum cleaner to completely remove water from the pipes and prevent them from bursting if they freeze.

Applying the closing kit: Use the antifreeze recommended by your pool specialist, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Final Protection Install the protective cover to prevent the accumulation of leaves and other debris in the pool. Don’t forget to adequately protect the water heater if necessary.
