When should you replace your in-ground pool liner?

The liner of your inground pool has an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years for vinyl models, while concrete surfaces need to be repainted every 8 to 10 years, as discoloration becomes clearly visible by that point. Certain warning signs indicate that a replacement is approaching — recognizing them early helps prevent costly repairs and structural damage.

The unmistakable signs

The first visual indicator is gradual discoloration of the liner. UV rays, chemicals, and time gradually alter the pigments. Slight discoloration is normal, but when white or stained areas appear irregularly, it’s a sign that the material is beginning to degrade.

A rough texture to the touch indicates a loss of elasticity. Healthy fabric is supple and smooth. If it becomes brittle, crackly, or abrasive underfoot, its structural integrity is compromised. Permanent creases that do not disappear after spring refilling indicate the same problem.

Recurring leaks are the most urgent warning sign. An abnormal drop in water level — exceeding the natural evaporation rate of approximately 1 inch per day in summer — suggests a puncture or tear. When spot repairs begin to add up, a full replacement becomes the more economical option.

Factors that accelerate wear and tear

Chronic chemical imbalance causes premature deterioration of the liner. A pH that is too low (below 7.0) makes the vinyl brittle, while a pH that is too high promotes calcium deposits that harden the surface. Chlorine overdose also causes accelerated bleaching and loss of flexibility.

Quebec’s harsh winters also put the liner to the test. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles put considerable pressure on the material. A properly installed pool enclosure protects the liner from these stresses.

Better safe than sorry

“The longevity of a liner depends as much on regular maintenance as on the quality of the original material. A well-maintained chemical balance and professional closing each fall can extend its life by several seasons.” – Tristan Dufour, Piscine Évolution Have your cover inspected annually, ideally during spring opening. Our team can assess its condition and advise you on the best time to plan a replacement, before problems get worse.
